About Us

Our History & Foundation

Voice of Migration is an interpretation and translation agency built on a foundation of humanity, dignity, and unwavering community support. Rooted in lived experience, we bring cultural insight, professionalism, and compassion to every interaction. Our story begins with migration and resilience. From those journeys grew a vision: to ensure that no voice is silenced by language. With more than 15 years of expertise across medical, legal, educational, and community settings, Voice of Migration is more than a business. It is a movement dedicated to healing, equity, and connection.

We are more than interpreters and translators. We are bridges between communities and institutions. Whether serving hospitals, schools, courts, or nonprofits, our commitment is the same: to provide access to safety, health, justice, and opportunity. Our innovative live-backup interpreter model ensures uninterrupted access to services, reflecting our promise that every voice will be heard. At Voice of Migration, language is more than words. It is access, belonging, and the difference between exclusion and inclusion. We stand as advocates, allies, and connectors. We are building a future where immigrant and refugee communities are fully seen, valued, and respected.

Meet Our Founder

Zakia Mumin

As a multilingual Somali American woman who came to the United States as both a refugee and an immigrant, I know firsthand what it feels like to arrive in a new country, uncertain of the language, and feel invisible in hospitals, schools, and courtrooms. That experience shaped my mission.

I founded Voice of Migration not just as a business, but as a commitment to ensure that no one else has to face those barriers alone. With more than 15 years of professional experience as an interpreter and translator in Somali, Swahili, Mai-Mai, and English, I have served across healthcare, legal, education, and community settings.

I also bring leadership experience as a member of the Oregon Secretary of State’s Translation Advisory Council, where I contribute to advancing equity and access in language services statewide. My academic background includes a Master’s degree in Education, which strengthens my commitment to both professional training and community empowerment.

Through Voice of Migration, I now use my voice — and elevate the voices of my community — to ensure every individual is seen, heard, and respected.

A Unique, Cost-Effective Approach

Voice of Migration is not here to compete. We are here to comfort, connect, and complete the work that matters most. Too often, when an interpreter cancels or arrives late, agencies and organizations are forced to scramble — paying double or losing valuable time. Our innovative all-in-one coordination system eliminates those challenges.

We ensure uninterrupted, high-quality language access by handling the scheduling, coordination, and backup planning for you. That means no duplicate payments, no last- minute scrambles, and no disruptions to the vital services your community depends on. With Voice of Migration, you save time, protect your budget, and provide the care and connection your clients deserve.

Our Mission

Voice of Migration exists to empower every human being with the voice and understanding they deserve, no matter their language, background, or circumstance. We believe that communication is a human right and that dignity begins with being heard.

Our mission is to amplify voices, connect communities, and remove barriers for immigrants and refugees. By bridging people and systems with accuracy, compassion, and cultural respect, we ensure that no one is left out of critical conversations in healthcare, education, justice, or community life — in Oregon and across the globe.
